HP Launches New Photosmart Printers

by admin on September 8, 2009

HP has today announced the launch of a new range of Photosmart printers in the UK, making use of its new TouchSmart technology, and greater integration for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.

The first printers to feature the TouchSmart technology will be the Photosmart C4680 (£79.99), the HP Photosmart (£99.99), HP Photosmart with Wireless (£129.99), HP Photosmart Plus (£149.99) and  HP Photosmart Premium (£199.99) all of which will go on sale in the UK in October.

The printers will all contain a TouchSmart screen that users can use to print from the built-in memory slot without the need to connect to a PC. The TouchSmart technology includes adjustment options to change lighting and colour, and remove red-eye without the need to use PC based photo editing software.

The included HP Photo Print Gadget is designed to make printing easier by allowing users to drag and drop photos, and can automatically crop images to fit the paper sizes available. Further innovations make it possible for iPhone and iPod Touch owners to wirelessly print using the iPrint software that is available free of charge from the Apple App Store.

The printers will use the following ink cartridges.

HP Photosmart C4680

HP 300 Black, HP 300 Tri-Colour

HP Photosmart, HP Photosmart with Wireless, HP Photosmart Plus

HP 364 Black, HP 364 Yellow, HP 364 Magenta, HP 364 Cyan

Investigation into Kodak Ink Price Claims

by admin on September 7, 2009

Kodak has been aggressively marketing its printers and inks as being a lower cost alternative to its major competitors. On Kodak’s website PrintAndProsper.com users are invited to compare their current printer models cost with a Kodak printer. Cost comparisons are provided for a number of printer models from Epson, Lexmark, Canon, Brother and HP.

Kodak’s claim that customers would save on average $110 by switching from HP products has resulted in a challenge from HP, through the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Better Business Bureau. Kodak has previously cooperated in a NAD investigation into an advertising claim that consumers can “Save up to 50% on everything you print”, with a positive result for Kodak. On this occasion however, Kodak have announced that they will not be cooperating with the NAD process.

The matter has now been passed by the National Advertising Division to the Federal Trade Commission for further investigation. With so many rival claims on printing costs it will be interesting to see what stance a government regulator will have on the issues at hand.
